Mushroom Bolognese with Kale

I love winter, and the excuse to hunker down and get cozy.  Put on a wooly sweater, some fluffy socks and break out the red wine.  But pairing red wines with the food we normally eat – fish, veggies, salads – can be challenging.  So this recipe, which relies on the earthy, umami-ness of mushrooms and miso and a long, slow cook for depth and complexity, has become a cold weather staple.  It’s rich and satisfying, and I might venture to say, even better than the meaty original.

Bengali Mustard Salmon

We eat salmon at least once a week in our house. It’s a nutritional superstar, full of brain-boosting, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids — and all of us, including my two little guys, love it. This recipe, from Indian goddess Madhur Jaffrey’s book At Home with Madhur Jaffrey, is in constant rotation.

Tortilla Chicken Soup with Kale

This rich, rustic tortilla soup with warm, smokey spice nourishes the body and soul. And it seems just right for these late season warm days that turn into brisk nights, as summer fades into fall. I love all the different textures – chunks of chicken, earthy kale, soft avocado and crunchy homemade tortilla strips. And let’s be honest – my boys love the opportunity to eat tortilla strips for dinner…

Chocolate-Beet Cupcakes with Raw Cacao Glaze

For me, and many a parent, I suspect, cupcakes have become ubiquitous.  Birthday parties, class treats, play dates – they all call for a cupcake, portable, portioned for tiny hands and crowd-pleasing.  So, as the mom of two little boys, I make a lot of cupcakes.  And being the healthy hacker that I am, there […]

Chunky Monkey Muffins

This recipe for chocolatey-banana muffins is adapted from a great pregnancy nutrition book called Feed the Belly.  I made them dozens of times during my two pregnancies, tinkering with the recipe as I went.  They’re a great snack for mamas-to-be, as they’re high in fiber, protein and omega-3s, and they got me through many a serious […]

Whole-Grain Gingerbread Cookies

I grew up with a strong Christmas cookie tradition.  “Cookie Day” was a really big deal, planned months in advance.  We spent a full Saturday each season baking dozens and dozens of cookies with my wonderful Martha Stewart-esque aunt, who would prepare as many as eight different batches of dough in advance so that my sister and I […]

Cranberry-Orange Smoothie

Fresh cranberries are everywhere this time of year, and I love their sweet-tart punch.  Plus, they’re a potent antioxidant and pack a ton of Vitamin C and fiber.  But what does one really do with them, besides make a cranberry sauce or relish for Thanksgiving (one that looks pretty, but no one really eats, that […]

Turkey Meatballs

Everybody needs a killer go-to dish that they can whip out, practically from memory, for guests or special occasions. One that pleases just about everyone, and doesn’t stress out the host. Preferably one that can be assembled ahead of time. For me, this is the dish, my “famous” turkey meatballs. Famous because I’ve made them so many times, at one point or other for every single person who has joined us for dinner, and are always a hit.

Apple Pie Smoothie

Apple picking has been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember.  My auntie used to take us every year when we were kids, to the orchards of Oak Glen or Tehachapi, in Southern California.  We’d come home with bushels of apples, and she’d go into apple processing overdrive.  Apple butter, apple […]

Avocado Hummus

I love hummus and always try to have a batch of my homemade version, the classic with a twist – fresh turmeric – on hand. (Will post this recipe soon, as it’s a crowd- and kid-pleaser!) This is a richer, fancier version, inspired by a dish we had recently at Farmshop in Larkspur Here, avocados and yogurt are blended in to replace some of the tahini, and the lovely green dip is made even greener…
